On a largely uninhabited snow covered Island in the Thames Estuary, Jim Fitz, is caught attempting to steal from three witches who live there. Finding a wooden chest in their rundown shack, he is disappointed to discover it to contain nothing more than rubbish . On hearing their sudden return Jim hides but is discovered. They question and taunt Jim, revealing to him the real truth of The Chest of Vulcanus, and the wonders therein. Making a break for the door into the snow, Jim is stopped by the evil Madam Creep Fungus, who casts a spell, turning him for all but one hour each night into an enormous hound with a meow like a cat. Following a disagreement, witches Phlegmella U’trid and Smogmella Pooky fly into night to get away from Madam Creep Fungus. Their reason for leaving was to buy Gibbets Farm, from where they would start their very own pickle factory, and the process of secretly integrating witches into the mortal world would begin. More than four hundred years later. Angela and Tom U’trid find themselves on Gibbets Farm for the Summer’s holidays, where they meet their Aunts Phlegmella and Smogmella for the first time since they were babies, and were each given a gift called the coins of Asterion, which from that date they had both worn around their necks, despite having no knowledge of their purpose. Whilst there, they meet a host of characters including Fitzi the dog, Sardos and Witchweasel the cats. They are awoken early, as they would be each morning of their stay in order to assist with the feeding of the many animals, their introduction to this life being attacked by chickens and splashed by pigs. One morning Tom puts a foot through a floor-board alongside his bed, discovering a curious object hidden among the splintered wood below, which they look at once the chores are completed. Phlegmella and Smogmella discuss secretly how the object could have found its way there? They enter a secret chamber by climbing down through what looks like an ordinary wooden chest, the same chest Jim Fitz had found long ago. Having found what they were seeking they alert The Great Witches Council that Mdm Creep Fungus could be about. They do this by lodging a report on the secret witches web site. The next morning, the children go for a walk, they see the enchanted orchard of the gigantic rhubarb trees and custard trees, the mystical Phantom Falls and other strange and curious things. They ask about these when they return for lunch. The children suspected a great secret was being concealed. Just after midnight on hearing noises outside, the children sneak across to the factory only to be frightened back to their bedroom by a shadowy creature. Phlegmella and Smogmella fly to a meeting of the great Witches Council at The Wicken Stones, on their broomsticks, unaware that one of their members is the son of Mdm.Creep Fungus. The meeting is thrown in to turmoil. One evening Angela and Tom successfully make their way to the roof, peering down through the skylight window into the pickle factory, down upon those working below. It all looked pretty ordinary until a flash of light illuminated their feature and Tom announces that they look like witches! The children realise someone was standing behind them, they had been discovered! Standing before Angela and Tom was a young boy, who they follow into the factory where they meet two strangely dressed witches, who in an instant transform into their aunts. The great family secret is revealed, there was much to tell and many mysteries were starting to make sense to them. The children are told they would only know if they were to be witches once they got home. When Jim transforms into Fitzi the dog before their eyes, his sad tale is explained. Phlegmella and Smogmella return to their witch form, they cast spells clothing the children in the robes of novice witches, before touring the real P.U'trid and S.Pooky Pickle Company at work!
